The Brain Upgrade I Needed: My Experience at the EBP Conference in Iowa

On April 29-30, I attend the Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Conference in Iowa at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Coralville Hotel. It is a bright and sunny day, although still pleasantly chilly outside. The atmosphere inside, however, feels warm and energizing from the very beginning.

Discovering the Purpose of the EBP Conference in Iowa

I join a group of highly accomplished nurses who hold graduate degrees and currently serves as leaders in their facilities. At first, I feel somewhat small because I do not have impressive titles after my name. Fortunately, they warmly welcome my thoughts and ideas as equal contributions. This genuine acceptance immediately sparks a strong fire within me.

Grinding before the conference

My day starts with an excellent preconference workshop focusing on the Iowa Model of EBP framework. The session demonstrates how to successfully initiate and structure and Evidence-Based Practice project. I understand this is only touching the surface. A more intensive workshop offers deeper learning about the Iowa Model.

Finding meaningful connections

After the workshop, I set up my poster in the ballroom. It remains on display for the entire two days of the conference. Designated times are scheduled for presenters to stand beside their posters. During this time, I also meet several Filipino nurses. We instantly connect, and their presence feels like a comforting reminder of home, even far away.

Small fiasco during lunch

I enjoy lunch at the hotel cafe. The staff slightly struggles to keep up with the large crowd and service is moving a bit slow. What boggles me is how they didn't anticipate this crowd. However, the food itself is genuinely delicious. I particularly savor the rich French onion soup paired with a satisfying sandwich.

Day One: Setting My Expectations

In the afternoon, the main conference session begins with a large and enthusiastic turnout. I get to see how these kinds of events usually happen. Then comes my turn - poster presentations. While standing by my poster, I quickly learn the value of a strong visual impact. I also discover how a compelling story naturally draws people in. The project began with my colleague Sarah Bagnasco experiencing her first sepsis case as a new nurse.

Learning from experience

Attendees ask thoughtful and challenging questions, some of which surprises me. Nevertheless, I answer them confidently. Each interaction is an upgrade to my thinking in real time. As I walk around and view other posters, I also ask thoughtful and curious questions. These moments further my critical thinking skills.

Day Two: Expecting More

The next day of the EBP Conference in Iowa proves even more vibrant than the first. Outstanding speakers share their expertise throughout the morning. During short breaks, poster presenters, including myself, stand by our posters for viewing and discussion.

Busy hallway of vendors

In the hallway, vendors are setting up their booths and they remain active all day. I happily approach all of them, collect merchandise, and ask questions. I learn about their latest products and innovations. A few vendors particularly catch my interest because I see their value in practice.

Buffet for the the attendees

Sumptuous breakfast also awaits attendees in the hallway. Obviously, I do not pass on this. I have a huge fill for myself. And for lunch, we go to a huge hall where we dine. I especially like the salmon.

Busy afternoon

In the afternoon, we attend podium presentations. Presenters confidently showcase their EBP projects. We move to another round of poster viewing. I chance upon viewing more posters and asking more questions. I get to talk to a lot of inspirational people too.

Key Takeaways from the Conference

The room is full of intellectual RNs. Many hold graduate degrees, and several proudly possess doctoral degrees. What impresses me most is the deep, truly palpable passion for Evidence-Based Practice radiating throughout the conference.

My biggest takeaway: I do not feel any pressure. Instead, I feel genuinely inspired. This remarkable experience strongly motivates me to develop and implement another EBP project on our floor.

A special note of gratitude

The EBP project I proudly present is originally by Sarah Bagnasco. She is a brilliant and truly excellent nurse. I feel truly blessed to work alongside her on this initiative and as a co-Sepsis Unit Resource Nurse. Thank you, Sarah, for your outstanding leadership and unwavering passion. This recognition belongs to you.

Huge thanks Tampa General Hospital for providing me with this wonderful opportunity. I appreciate my manager, Jenalyn Keller, for placing her trust in me to attend and represent our team. I sincerely value your support.

Final reflection

This EBP Conference in Iowa clearly shows how the right environment encourages growth, confidence, and continuous learning. The inspiration I get by being with passionate and proficient professional is a worthwhile encounter. I leave Iowa with feelings of motivation and ready to turn inspiration into meaningful action for better patient care.
